Tackling a serious life-threatening health condition getting out of control
Achieving 10 years results in just one week
Type 2 Diabetes is the fastest growing health crisis of our time; diagnoses have doubled in just twenty years.
It is a life-threatening condition that can also lead to devastating complications such as amputation, blindness, kidney disease, stroke and heart disease if people don’t receive a timely diagnosis and begin receiving the right care.
“With more than 12 million people across the UK at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and prevalence of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes still on the rise, it’s clear there’s a huge amount of work to be done.
It Is Preventable
However, it is preventable, especially if those at risk are aware of the risks to seek the support they need to reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes UK (in partnership with the University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. had created a risk assessment diagnostic tool which is designed for people without a current diagnosis of diabetes and is intended to highlight a person’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years.
The assessment is a non-medical procedure and is in the format of a questionnaire only takes a couple of minutes. But it will let a person know about here risk.
Knowing your risk enables an individual to seek help, advice and support to reduce their risk and avoid diabetes Type 2 and its consequences.
Despite the importance and benefits of taking a risk assessment, and the prevalence of those at risk on average only 3,000 risk assessments were taken a year.
So how could Diabetes UK up these numbers?
Seeking a route to the masses
Seeing the success of Tesco reaching out to its customer in promoting Cancer Research UK’s race for life we explored the opportunity to collaborate with Tesco and reach its customers, especially with there being a pharmacy in the majority of stores.
When and How
We identified Diabetes week as a key window of opportunity and Tesco had posters and leaflets promoting the risk assessment, which could be completed there and then at its pharmacy, with the opportunity to provide further information, support and guidance.
Finding out your risk of Type 2 diabetes only takes a few minutes. It could be the most important thing you do today.
Result – An incredible 1200 % increase
The results were phenomenal with 40,000 people taking the test in just one week (a twelve hundred per cent increase) of which 20% were identified as medium/high risk.
These numbers in one month were more than what had been achieved in the previous 10 years combined.
With diabetes being one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today. If we are to curb this growing health crisis and see a reduction in the number of people dying from diabetes and its complications, we need to increase awareness of the risks, bring about wholesale changes in lifestyle, improve self-management among people with diabetes and improve access to integrated diabetes care services.
The risk assessment is a key tool in helping make this change.
